Smart home gear has a habit of promising a lot and then asking for your attention every day: another app, another hub, another firmware update that undoes the setting you finally got right. Smarq exists because it doesn't have to be that way.
What we do
We curate a short list of smart home and AI products, one category at a time, and we test them before they go on the site. Cameras, plugs, lighting, robot vacuums, locks, sensors, voice assistants, wearables, kitchen. Not everything that exists, just the products that hold up.
What we look for
- It works out of the box. Pairing should take minutes, not an evening. If a product needed a workaround to set up, it didn't make the list.
- It plays well with what you already own. We favour products that support Matter or work natively with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home, and we say plainly which ones do.
- It's useful without a subscription. Optional cloud plans are fine. Products that are crippled without one are not.
- The specs are honest. Battery life, range and resolution on our product pages are the numbers we'd expect you to see, not the ones on the side of the box.
- It quietly does its job. The best smart device is the one you forget is there. That's the standard.
What we don't do
We don't sell gadgets for the sake of gadgets, and we don't write hype. If a product is a good fit for a specific situation and a poor fit for another, the description says so.
